Full Job Description

As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for leveraging both experimental method and physics-based modeling tools to advance the development of metallic materials, which will be used in high-performing and reusable Rocket Engines. As part of a team, you will apply your expertise in Alloy Development to develop next generation of producible metal alloys. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight.

Responsibilities:

  • Apply physical metallurgy principles to material development by leveraging experimental and computational materials modeling approaches.

  • Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to select effective material systems meeting design requirements.

  • Develop and execute internal and external material test campaigns.

  • Identify technology gaps in rocket engine metallurgical systems and execute development efforts to improve technology readiness for future designs.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum B.S in Material Science & Engineering or related discipline and 5+ years relevant experience, OR M.S. in Material Science & Engineering or related discipline and 3+ years relevant experience, OR Ph.D. in Material Science & Engineering or related discipline

  • Experience with thermodynamic modeling using CALPHAD based applications

  • Basic programming skills for use in engineering applications (Python, Matlab, or similar)

  • Familiarity with standard methods for testing mechanical properties (including fatigue, fracture toughness, tensile) of metallic materials.Strong written, presentation, interpersonal, and organization skills

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • Ph.D. in Material Science & Engineering or related field and 5+ years relevant experience

  • Expertise in alloy design for Ni-based superalloys and at least one of the following alloy systems: Titanium, Steel, Copper, or Aluminum.

  • Expertise in developing integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) models.

  • Understanding of materials processing (melting, casting, forging, additive manufacturing, powder metallurgy, heat treating, etc)

  • Proven experience managing technology development projects.
